How can learners become actively involved in the learning process?

Updates:
  1. The class trip schedule will be updated next Tuesday, February 7.
  2. Please notify me by Thursday, February 2 if your Digital Media Project group needs materials for your presentation (copies, speakers, markers, poster paper, etc. -- please note that the only machine with speakers in our classroom is the instructor station).
------------------------------------------
We've talked (ad nauseum) about the definition of a technology-enhanced learning environment. We've also discussed the specific components you would find in a TELE or new learning environment. Bu
t how do you actually ensure that students are learning in this type of environment? How can you be certain that students stay actively involved in their own learning?
-----------------------------------------
Every educator has their own method for preparing learning activities (lesson plans) that ensure active learning. [Meyers and Jones (1993) define active learning as learning environments that allow students to talk and listen, read, write, and reflect as they approach course content through problem-solving exercises, informal small groups, simulations, case studies, role playing, and other activities -- all of which require students to apply what they are learning (p. xi).
Many studies show that learning is enhanced when students become actively involved in the learning process. excerpt from Teaching Strategies]

I'll talk about my own method during today's class. What is important to note is that all of these methods are based on what we as educators have learned from experience, education, trial and error, and so on. We'll spend the next few days talking about how you prepare learning activities: what are they, what are the different models, how do you design one.
---------------------------------------
An important part of designing a learning activity is to know the tools, resources, and teaching strategies that are available to you and your students. During today's class, you will begin to create a toolbox of sorts - with a collection of teaching strategies that you might incorporate in your TELE project (or even in your group's Digital Media Project). We'll add tools and resources throughout the remainder of the semester.

Creating a Teaching and Learning Toolbox:

  1. Complete the KWRL form - What do you know about teaching strategies? what do you need to know about teaching strategies? what resources will you use to learn about teaching strategies? and how will you show you have learned about teaching strategies?
  2. Go to the Blogger website and create a new blog with the address: yournamestoolbox.blogspot.com (Ex: gretchenstoolbox.blogspot.com)
  3. Create a new post titled: Teaching Strategies That Promote Active Learning
  4. Using the links listed below and any other links you might find, create an organized list of resources that help to inform you about teaching strategies.
  5. Your finished post should have at least 5 distinctly different resources and should indicate how you used the resources to learn about specific teaching strategies (there should be a direct connection between your KWRL chart and the organizational structure of your post). Try to identify at least one teaching strategy that you hope to incorporate in your TELE project.
  6. Your Teaching Strategies post should be completed before class on Tuesday, February 7. Email the address for your blog as soon as you have created it.
Teaching Strategy Resources:
For Thursday
  1. Continue working on your blog posting - have enough completed so that you will be able to ask questions and get assistance during class.
  2. Bring 1 or 2 items that could be used to make trail mix -- be creative!

What is a new learning environment?

We have already begun to develop a definition of technology-enhanced learning environments -- but what is the definition of a learning environment in general? How can that definition help to refine ours?

A learning environment includes all of the elements that make up the design and implementation of the instruction; it includes all conditions, circumstances, and influences that affect the learners' development -- Lever-Duffy chapter distributed in class.

We'll create a visual representation of this definition during today's class.

There is much talk about the "new learning environment." What does that mean? What is the role of the teacher and student in this environment? What is technology's role? What are the new conditions, circumstances, and influences that affect learner development?

What can we add to our visual representation to show the new learning environment?

How does this change our definition of a technology-enhanced learning environment? Write a "telegram definition" to show your understanding to TELEs

------------------------------------
Work with your Digital Media group to complete the Digital Media proposal which is due next Thursday, January 26 at the beginning of class.
-----------------------------------
For Tuesday:
Please read the Lever-Duffy chapter as preparation for our class discussions next Tuesday and Thursday.

How do you define "digital media"?

Please turn in your schedule sheets for the semester so we can begin planning "out of class" experiences.

---------------------
We'll look at some of the technology-enhanced learning environment examples that you added to our Wikipedia article. What do these environments have in common? What will you use to inform the development of your TELE project?
--------------------
We have one group project this semester and that is the Digital Media Project. The graduate version of 5500 (EDIT 7500) does a similar project each semester and they have created their own wiki to share their information: http://techintegration.editme.com

What is the Digital Media Project? What is required?

What is a technology-enhanced learning environment?

Class Business:
1. Our 2 main projects this semester are the group digital media presentation and the technology-enhanced learning environment project. We will discuss the TELE project in class today and the digital media presentation on Tuesday.

2. Please complete the class/work schedule handout so that I may use it to develop our guest speaker / field trip calendar for the semester. I would like to be able to schedule trips on dates that the maximum number of 5500 students can attends.

----------------------------

So what is a technology-enhanced learning environment? Is there an actual definition? Do a search on Wikipedia.
How can we add to this "vast" body of knowledge that exists? What would a class definition look like? Work with a partner to develop a concise definition of a TELE. Use ISTE, LoTi, and other resources to develop your definition. Use poster paper to write your definition to share with the class.
------------------------------
Now that we've developed a class definition and added it to Wikipedia - we need several examples of TELEs. Use the Apple Learning Interchange and the Edutopia site to find a minimum of 3 examples of TELEs for your interest area. Add these 3 links to our Wikipedia definition with a short annotation on why each example is a match for our definition. This is due before next Tuesday's class.

Welcome to EDIT 5500

What are your hopes and fears about K-12 technology integration? What are your expectations for this course?
------------------------------------------------------------

In this course you will continue an exploration of K-12 technology integration that was begun in your EDIT 2000 course. You will focus more on project development and less on skill acquisition in this course. Our focus for this semester will be to develop a "technology-enhanced learning environment" for the classroom of your choice. As the semester progresses, you will begin to see that the definition of the word "classroom" is broader than you might have once thought.

To prepare you for the development of your technology-enhanced learning environment (TELE) you will study different forms of learning environments and learning theories. You will investigate the development of learning activities using a process called ADDIE. With a group, you will explore new digital media and how it can be used to enhance learning environments. You will visit classrooms and meet with guest speakers to help to understand how to incorporate the skills you acquired in EDIT 2000 in order to develop your TELE. You will focus your energies on research, observation, and project development to create your TELE.

The syllabus will give you additional information about our course. The calendar will give you an idea of what will be discussed during each class meeting. The projects page will help you to complete the course assignments on time. This course weblog will help to keep you up-to-date on classroom discussions, etc.

During class on Thursday we will complete a short review of ISTE standards and LoTi levels to shore up our foundation on technology integration begun in EDIT 2000. In order to prepare for Thursday's class, please do the following:
1. Read the articles provided in class.
2. Subscribe to Edutopia
3. Review the syllabus and calendar as we will be finalizing dates and projects during the next 2 weeks of class.
